Limbo (kind of...)
J-Term is over, spring semester doesn't start for another week and I'm the only college student still at home (at least it feels like it...). So yeah, I'm stuck in a type of limbo. All I have to do is write internship applications, which is kind of terrifying in its own way. Because I was able to work at NIST after my freshman year, I'm feeling a lot of pressure (mostly from myself) to live up to that expectation this summer. Writing personal statements in particular is scary because although I'm incredibly proud of the work I've done to achieve my academic goals this year, I have such a hard time putting what I've done into words succinctly enough that it will make sense in a 500ish word personal statement. I'm trying my best to not be overwhelmed, but with the first deadline only a week away, I'm starting to feel the stress a little bit. I am very grateful that my recommenders have been great at responding to my emails and subtract a significant amount of stress from the process.
In other news, I finally saw Hidden Figures yesterday and it was 100% as good as advertised (or maybe better!) I am so amazed at the struggles that the women portrayed in the film experienced and it makes me so much more grateful to be in such a supportive environment both at home and at school where I don't have to face similar struggles. It has also inspired me to continue to be an advocate for women in all STEM fields, but especially math and computer science. Anyone who is in STEM should go see this movie. Bring your family as well, you never know which child will see Katherine Jackson, Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson and think "I can do that too!".
So yeah, that's what's up with me. J-Term was so much fun and I learned so much about a fascinating topic. I'm really ready to go back to school and start a new semester. I've finally got all of my textbooks (and my 302 book is the most gorgeous thing!) and I'm am so so so excited to get back to TAing. While limbo can be nice for a couple of days, it gets very boring very quickly.
Until next time,
E.
